Mastering the G-Point: How to File for Strength and Shape

The G-point — also known as the stress apex — plays a crucial role in both the beauty and durability of nail extensions. Whether you're building almond, coffin, or square shapes, maintaining this subtle high point helps prevent breakage and enhances overall form.

Here’s how to file the nail with intention, ensuring your G-point remains intact and perfectly balanced.

G-Point Filing

1. What Is the G-Point?

The G-point is the highest point of the nail’s curve, typically found between the middle of the nail and the free edge. A well-positioned apex ensures that:

  • The nail holds its shape and doesn’t appear flat or collapsed.
  • It withstands pressure better, especially with long shapes.
  • The nail looks elegant and well-balanced from both side and top views.

2. Basic Principles for G-Point-Friendly Filing

To maintain the G-point properly:

  • Avoid over-filing the centre — this removes the apex and weakens the nail.
  • Do not leave thick sidewalls — this makes the nail look bulky and unrefined.
  • Instead:
    • File more along the sidewalls to create a tapered look.
    • File lightly across the nail surface, maintaining height in the centre.
    • Refine the tip carefully, keeping it slim but stable.

3. Filing Steps to Maintain the G-Point

Step 1: File the Sidewalls

  • Hold the file at about a 45° angle to the side of the nail.
  • File from underneath the sidewall outward, following a straight or slightly tapered path toward the tip.
  • Avoid aggressive sawing motions — especially in the cuticle corners.

Goal: Create clean, slim edges that still feel strong and supportive.

Step 2: File the Nail Body

  • Hold the file parallel to the nail surface.
  • File using even, light strokes from one side to the other.
  • Focus on smoothing, not flattening — preserve the natural rise of the G-point.

Goal: A smooth surface with a subtle curve remaining at the centre.

Step 3: Refine the Nail Tip

  • Adjust the filing based on shape:
    • For almond: round the tip into a soft oval.
    • For coffin: taper sidewalls slightly and keep the tip straight.
  • File gently — don’t over-thin or distort the tip.

Goal: A refined tip that’s balanced and proportional to the nail’s overall structure.

4. Correct Hand Techniques When Filing

Task Correct Technique Common Mistakes
Holding the file Hold firmly but gently, file in one direction Sawing aggressively back and forth, causing cracks
Filing sidewalls Angle the file at 45°, file from underneath out Filing straight at 90°, leading to bumps and unevenness
Filing the body Light, smooth strokes across the full width Uneven filing, digging into the G-point
Refining the tip Adjust evenly on both sides with soft control Over-filing one side, making the tip crooked

5. Key Reminders to Keep the G-Point Perfect

  • Always check the side profile under a light — a healthy G-point shows a smooth, natural curve (not flat, not bulging).
  • Use a fine buffer (240–400 grit) to complete the surface without disturbing the apex.
  • Know when to stop: Once the nail is smooth, sidewalls are slim, and the apex is gently defined — stop filing. Overworking it can weaken the structure.

By mastering G-point maintenance through mindful filing, you elevate your work from good to exceptional. This balance of strength and shape is what defines true nail artistry — and keeps clients coming back for more.
